ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess urologist attitudes toward clinical decision support embedded into the electronic health record and define design needs to facilitate implementation and impact. With recent advances in big data and artificial intelligence, enthusiasm for personalized, data-driven tools to improve surgical decision-making has grown, but the impact of current tools remains limited. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed methods study from 2019-2020 was performed. First, survey responses from the 2019 American Urological Association annual census evaluated attitudes toward an automatic clinical decision support tool that would display risk/benefit data. This was followed by the purposeful sampling of 25 urologists and qualitative interviews assessing perspectives on clinical decision support impact and design needs. Bivariable, multivariable, and coding-based thematic analysis were applied and integrated. RESULTS: Among a weighted sample of 12,366 practicing urologists, the majority agreed clinical decision support would help decision-making (70.9%, 95% CI 68.7-73.2%), aid patient counseling (78.5%, 95% CI 76.5-80.5%), save time (58.1%, 95% CI 55.7-60.5%), and improve patient outcomes (42.9%, 95% CI 40.5-45.4%). More years in practice was negatively associated with agreement (p<0.001). Urologists described how clinical decision support could bolster evidence-based care, personalized medicine, resource utilization, and patient experience. They also identified multiple implementation barriers and provided suggestions on form, functionality, and visual design to improve usefulness and ease of use. CONCLUSIONS: Urologists have favorable attitudes toward the potential for clinical decision support in the electronic health record. Smart design will be critical to ensure effective implementation and impact.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore how changes in planned retirement age, practice setting, and physician productivity may impact the workforce shortage in urology. METHODS: We compared data between the 2015 and 2022 American Urological Association census, a specialty-wide annual survey which collects data on demographics, practice patterns, and procedures from a representative sample of U.S. urologists. Workforce productivity was measured by the self-reported number of hours worked per week and patients seen per week. A novel formula was developed to demonstrate how planned retirement age and productivity impact the workforce's production capacity. RESULTS: The total number of practicing urologists increased during the period from 2015 to 2022 (11,990 to 13,976), while the mean age of practicing urologists decreased slightly (55.0 to 54.5years; P < .002). During this period, the mean planned age of retirement for all urologists decreased from 68.9years to 67.7 (P < .001). Urologists in solo practice had a significantly higher planned age of retirement at 71.9years (P < .001) as compared to all other practice models. The number of patients seen per week for all urologists decreased from 78.7 to 72.9 (P < .001). The amount of hours worked per week remained relatively constant between the study periods. The maximum possible number of patients seen by the workforce prior to retirement increased by only 2.4% during the study interval. CONCLUSION: Though the U.S. urology workforce is growing and the mean age is decreasing, decreases in planned retirement age and productivity may offset these gains and intensify the physician shortage for U.S. urologists.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Our goal was to explore the current trends in burnout, career choice regret, and well-being needs among urology residents and fellows, with specific emphasis on identifying key factors associated with burnout. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AUA Workforce Workgroup collaborated with the AUA Data Team to analyze data from the 2021 AUA Census, comprising a total of 243 residents and fellows. Key demographics, benefits and resources, career choice and debt, and burnout levels were analyzed, focusing on variables like gender, PGY (postgraduate year) level, debt burden, and personal health appointments. RESULTS: Overall, 48% of residents and 33% of fellows met criteria for professional burnout, with a higher incidence among PGY-2 residents (70%). Depersonalization was particularly notable, with 74% of residents reporting medium to high levels. Burnout was significantly associated with difficulty attending personal health appointments (52% vs 34%) and lack of access to on-call rooms (54% vs 36%). In contrast, having children during residency was associated with lower burnout levels (30.8% vs 49.1%). Meal plans were ranked as the most desired benefit (32%), followed by ability to attend health appointments during work hours (17%) and paid family leave (16%). Educational debt over $150,000 was carried by 53% of residents and 48% of fellows. Interestingly, burnout rates showed no statistically significant difference in response rates across genders, relationship status, amount of educational debt, presence of paid maternity or paternity leave, and type of childcare arrangements. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout remains a significant issue among urology trainees, with a complex interplay of factors like lack of personal time and provision of call rooms. The alarming rates of depersonalization and exhaustion highlight the urgency of implementing targeted interventions. Enhanced support systems, improved access to health care appointments, provision of call rooms, and debt management programs are recommended to alleviate the growing problem of professional burnout in the field of urology.

INTRODUCTION: We investigate and analyze the available information regarding on-call patterns among urologists in the US. METHODS: The AUA Workforce Workgroup collaborated with the AUA Data Team to analyze information from the 2022 AUA Census. Extracted data were analyzed to identify variability across gender, subspecialty, hours worked per week, AUA section, salary, and practice setting. We used χ2 tests to compare the groups with respect to each factor and defined statistical significance as a P value less than .05. RESULTS: There were significant differences by gender and several other on-call factors including being required to take call to maintain hospital privileges (reported by 76% of female urologists vs 67% of male urologists; P = .026), getting paid for weekend call (28% of females vs 38% of males; P = .030), and making over $500 per day when taking weekend call (18% of females vs 32% of males; P < .001). Other differences existed between AUA sections in percentage of physicians receiving over $500 for weekday or weekend calls (P < .001). Lastly, practice setting differed in likelihood of being paid over $500 for weekday call (44% reported by private practice urologists, 7% reported by academic urologists, 14% reported by institutional urologists; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: These results underscore the substantial variability in on-call responsibilities and structure within the AUA workforce. Further research and regular participation in future censuses are recommended to continue to characterize these trends.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between self-perceived use of shared decision-making among urologists with use of validated prediction tools and self-described surgical decision-making. METHODS: This is a convergent mixed methods study of these parallel data from two modules (Shared Decision Making and Validated Prediction tools) within the 2019 American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Census. The shared decision-making (SDM) module queried aspects of SDM that urologists regularly used. The validated prediction tools module queried whether urologists regularly used, trusted, and found prediction tools helpful. Selected respondents to the 2019 AUA Annual Census underwent qualitative interviews on their surgical decision-making. RESULTS: In the weight sampled of 12,312 practicing urologists, most (77%) reported routine use of SDM, whereas only 30% noted regular use of validated prediction tools. On multivariable analysis, users of prediction tools were not associated with regular SDM use (31% vs 28%, P = .006) though was associated with use of decision aids f (32% vs 26%, P < .001). Shared decision-making emerged thematically with respect to matching treatment options, prioritizing goals, and navigating challenging decisions. However, the six specific components of shared decision-making ranged in their mentions within qualitative interviews. CONCLUSION: Most urologists report performing SDM as supported by its thematic presence in surgical decision-making. However, only a minority use validated prediction tools and urologists infrequently mention specific SDM components. This discrepancy provides an opportunity to explore how urologists perform SDM and can be used to support integrated strategies to implement SDM more effectively in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Growing interest in urology among medical students highlights the need to understand factors influencing their specialty choice in today's context. We also investigate COVID-19's impact on these factors and any disparities among female and underrepresented in medicine (URiM) students. METHODS: From 2019 to 2021, the AUA Annual Census survey included medical student-focused questions on demographics, career interests, and decision factors. Responses were analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred ninety-two medical students participated. Thirty-six (24%) identified as female and 19 (13%) as URiM. Common reasons students would choose urology included surgical procedures (93%) and "good lifestyle" among surgical careers (85%), with no differences across gender or URiM status. Compared to pre-COVID (2019), during COVID (2020-2021), a greater proportion of students cited cutting-edge technology (90.1% vs 73.1%, P = .008) and surgical procedures (98.6% vs 87.2%, P = .008) as reasons to choose urology. Reasons for not choosing urology included competitiveness (48%) and poor lifestyle (26%). Female and URiM students expressed concern related to the combined "male dominated/gender discrimination/lack of diversity" aspect (female 33% vs male 3%, P < .001; URiM 25% vs non-URiM 7%, P = .04). CONCLUSIONS: The AUA Census survey highlights factors influencing medical students' decisions regarding urology. Interest in procedural and technological aspects grew during COVID. Students expressed concern over the field's competitiveness and poor lifestyle, while also acknowledging that urology offers a favorable lifestyle compared to other surgical careers. Female and URiM students expressed ongoing concerns over the combined aspect of gender discrimination and/or the lack of existing diversity in the field.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess urologists' perceptions and practices related to smoking and smoking cessation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six survey questions were designed to assess beliefs, practices, and determinants related to tobacco use assessment and treatment (TUAT) in outpatient urology clinics. These questions were included in an annual census survey (2021) offered to all practicing urologists. Responses were weighted to represent the practicing US population of nonpediatric urologists (N = 12,852). The primary outcome was affirmative responses to the question, "Do you agree it is important for urologists to screen for and provide smoking cessation treatment to patients in the outpatient clinic?" Practice patterns, perceptions, and opinions of optimal care delivery were assessed. RESULTS: In total, 98% of urologists agreed (27%) or strongly agreed (71%) that cigarette smoking is a significant contributor to urologic disease. However, only 58% agreed that TUAT is important in urology clinics. Most urologists (61%) advise patients who smoke to quit but do not provide additional cessation counseling or medications or arrange follow-up. The most frequently identified barriers to TUAT were lack of time (70%), perceptions that patients are unwilling to quit (44%), and lack of comfort prescribing cessation medications (42%). Additionally, 72% of respondents stated that urologists should provide a recommendation to quit and refer patients for cessation support. CONCLUSION: TUAT does not routinely occur in an evidence-based fashion in outpatient urology clinics. Addressing established barriers and facilitating these practices with multilevel implementation strategies can promote tobacco treatment and improve outcomes for patients with urologic disease.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic health records (EHRs) have become widely adopted with increasing emphasis on improving care delivery. Improvements in surgery may be limited by specialty-specific issues that impact EHR usability and engagement. Accordingly, we examined EHR use and perceptions in urology, a diverse surgical specialty. METHODS: We conducted a national, sequential explanatory mixed methods study. Through the 2019 American Urological Association Census, we surveyed urologic surgeons on EHR use and perceptions and then identified associated characteristics through bivariable and multivariable analyses. Using purposeful sampling, we interviewed 25 urologists and applied coding-based thematic analysis, which was then integrated with survey findings. RESULTS: Among 2,159 practicing urologic surgeons, 2,081 (96.4%) reported using an EHR. In the weighted sample (n = 12,366), over 90% used the EHR for charting, viewing results, and order entry with most using information exchange functions (59.0-79.6%). In contrast, only 35.8% felt the EHR increases clinical efficiency, whereas 43.1% agreed it improves patient care, which related thematically to information management, administrative burden, patient safety, and patient-surgeon interaction. Quantitatively and qualitatively, use and perceptions differed by years in practice and practice type with more use and better perceptions among more recent entrants into the urologic workforce and those in academic/multispecialty practices, who may have earlier EHR exposure, better infrastructure, and more support. CONCLUSION: Despite wide and substantive usage, EHRs engender mixed feelings, especially among longer-practicing surgeons and those in lower-resourced settings (e.g., smaller and private practices). Beyond reducing administrative burden and simplifying information management, efforts to improve care delivery through the EHR should focus on surgeon engagement, particularly in the community, to boost implementation and user experience.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: We examined contemporary patterns in treatment of male stress urinary incontinence and identified predictors of undergoing specific surgical procedures. METHODS: Utilizing the AUA Quality Registry, we identified men with stress urinary incontinence utilizing International Classification of Disease codes and related procedures for stress urinary incontinence performed from 2014 to 2020 utilizing Current Procedural Terminology codes. Characteristics of the patient, surgeon, and practice were included in a multivariate analysis of predictors of management type. RESULTS: We identified 139,034 men with stress urinary incontinence in the AUA Quality Registry, of whom only 3.2% underwent surgical intervention during the study period. Artificial urinary sphincter was the most common procedure with 4,287/7,706 (56%) performed, followed by urethral sling with 2,368/7,706 (31%), and lastly urethral bulking with 1,040/7,706 (13%). There was no significant change by year in volume of each procedure performed during the study period. A large proportion of urethral bulking was performed by a disproportionately small number of practices; 5 high-volume practices performed 54% of the total urethral bulking over the study period. Open surgical procedure was more likely in patients with prior radical prostatectomy, urethroplasty, or care at an academic enter. Urethral bulking was more likely in patients with a history of bladder cancer or care by a surgeon of increasing age or female gender. CONCLUSIONS: Utilization of artificial urinary sphincter and urethral sling now exceeds utilization of urethral bulking for male stress urinary incontinence, though some practices continue to perform a disproportionate volume of bulking. Using data from the AUA Quality Registry, we can identify areas for quality improvement to facilitate guideline-adherent care.

OBJECTIVE: To assess rates of urologist-reported differential treatment in practice and practice limitations based on characteristics of urologists... identity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 2021 AUA Census samples were linked with the United States (US) practicing urologist population file and assigned proper sample weighting to adjust for non-response bias. Responses to 2 questions of the Census related to (1) (negative) differential treatment experienced in practice and (2) limitations in patients/diagnoses seen in practice due to different aspects of respondent...s identity were evaluated. Responses were stratified based on self-reported gender (female vs male) and race (White vs non-White); results were compared using a chi-squared test. RESULTS: A total of 1742 urologists, representing 13,790 practicing US urologists through post-stratified weighting, responded to the Census. Overall, amongst those who answered the relevant questions, 16.3% reported having experienced differential treatment in practice due to their identity and 6.1% reported being limited in patients/diagnoses seen in practice due to their identity. Women were more likely than men to have experienced differential treatment (75.0% vs.ß10.2%, P.ß<.ß.001) and to be limited in patients/diagnoses seen in practice (27.0% vs.ß3.7%, P.ß<.ß.001). Similarly, non-White respondents were more likely than White urologists to both have experienced differential treatment (30.4% vs.ß14.1%, P.ß<.ß.001) and to be limited in patients/diagnoses seen in practice (12.8% vs.ß5.0%, P.ß<.ß.001). CONCLUSION: Female and non-White urologists are more likely to experience differential treatment in their practice and limitations in the scope of their practice. Further studies are needed to characterize these experiences and explore the etiologies of these differences.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Active surveillance (AS) is endorsed by clinical guidelines as the preferred management strategy for low-risk prostate cancer, but its use in contemporary clinical practice remains incompletely defined. Objective: To characterize trends over time and practice- and practitioner-level variation in the use of AS in a large, national disease registry. Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort study included men with low-risk prostate cancer, defined as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) less than 10 ng/mL, Gleason grade group 1, and clinical stage T1c or T2a, newly diagnosed between January 1, 2014, and June 1, 2021. Patients were identified in the American Urological Association (AUA) Quality (AQUA) Registry, a large quality reporting registry including data from 1945 urology practitioners at 349 practices across 48 US states and territories, comprising more than 8.5 million unique patients. Data are collected automatically from electronic health record systems at participating practices. Exposures: Exposures of interest included patient age, race, and PSA level, as well as urology practice and individual urology practitioners. Main Outcomes and Measures: The outcome of interest was the use of AS as primary treatment. Treatment was determined through analysis of electronic health record structured and unstructured clinical data and determination of surveillance based on follow-up testing with at least 1 PSA level remaining greater than 1.0 ng/mL. Results: A total of 20 809 patients in AQUA were diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer and had known primary treatment. The median age was 65 (IQR, 59-70) years; 31 (0.1%) were American Indian or Alaska Native; 148 (0.7%) were Asian or Pacific Islander; 1855 (8.9%) were Black; 8351 (40.1%) were White; 169 (0.8%) were of other race or ethnicity; and 10 255 (49.3%) were missing information on race or ethnicity. Rates of AS increased sharply and consistently from 26.5% in 2014 to 59.6% in 2021. However, use of AS varied from 4.0% to 78.0% at the urology practice level and from 0% to 100% at the practitioner level. On multivariable analysis, year of diagnosis was the variable most strongly associated with AS; age, race, and PSA value at diagnosis were all also associated with odds of surveillance. Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study of AS rates in the AQUA Registry found that national, community-based rates of AS have increased but remain suboptimal, and wide variation persists across practices and practitioners. Continued progress on this critical quality indicator is essential to minimize overtreatment of low-risk prostate cancer and by extension to improve the benefit-to-harm ratio of national prostate cancer early detection efforts.

PURPOSE: We hypothesize burnout has failed to improve and certain demographics may be disproportionately affected. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AUA Workforce Workgroup examined work from the annual AUA Census over the past several years. Particular to this study, relevant burnout-related data were examined from the past 5 years. RESULTS: In 2021, 36.7% of urologists reported burnout compared to 36.2% in 2016. Burnout in men decreased from 36.3% to 35.2%, but increased in women from 35.3% to 49.2%. When examined by age, the largest increases in burnout were seen in those <45 years old, increasing from 37.9% to 44.8%, followed by 45-54 years old, increasing from 43.4% to 44.6%. When asked about the effect of COVID-19 on burnout, 54% of urologists didn't feel COVID-19 impacted burnout. Beyond burnout, only 25.0% of men and 4.6% of women reported no conflict between work and personal responsibilities, while 25.7% of men and 44.7% of women resolved these conflicts in favor of work or were unable to resolve them. Of respondents, 22.5% of men and 37.1% of women were "dissatisfied" with work-life balance. Similarly, 33.6% of men reported their work schedule does not leave enough time for personal/family life, compared to 57.5% of women. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, urologists have higher burnout now when compared to 2016. The gender discrepancy has vastly widened with women experiencing burnout at an increased rate of 14% compared to 2016, while burnout in men decreased by 1%. Burnout has increased the most in those <45 years old. Further action is needed to substantiate the causes of burnout.

Background: Anticholinergic (ACH) burden is a risk factor for negative health outcomes among older adults. Several medications contribute to ACH burden, including antimuscarinics used to manage overactive bladder (OAB). Objectives: This study aimed to understand the extent of ACH burden in an OAB population in the United States. Design: Non-interventional retrospective analysis. Methods: Adults with OAB whose care providers participated in the American Urological Association Quality (AQUA) Registry between 2014 and 2020 were included in this study. An adapted version of the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) measure of anticholinergic polypharmacy (poly-ACH) was used to assess ACH burden. The primary outcome was the annual prevalence of poly-ACH, and a secondary outcome was the percentage of patients taking 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or ⩾ 5 ACH medications by calendar year. Analyses were stratified by age category at diagnosis and sex. Results: The sample comprised 552,840 patients with OAB. The mean age at initial OAB diagnosis was 65.7 years (58.2% male; 57.4% white). Prevalence of poly-ACH was highest in 2015 (3.7%) and lowest in 2020 (1.9%). Patients prescribed no ACH medications made up the largest proportion of each cohort, while those prescribed five or more comprised the smallest. The trend of decreasing proportions of patients taking increasing numbers of ACH medications was consistent. The proportion of patients prescribed no ACH medications increased from 63.3% in 2014 to 74.6% in 2020. The percentage of those prescribed three or more ACHs remained largely unchanged. Poly-ACH was highest among younger individuals (< 65 years of age) and females; temporal trends were similar overall and within each age and sex stratum. Conclusion: In this study, poly-ACH in patients with OAB was relatively infrequent and decreased over the study period. Further evaluation of poly-ACH is needed to assess whether the study findings reflect increased awareness of the negative effects of poly-ACH.

ABSTRACT

Elabela is a component of the apelinergic system and may exert a cardioprotective role by regulating the innate immune responses. Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) have a significant role in initiating and progressing immune-inflammatory responses. While ILCs have been intensively investigated during the last decade, little is known about their relationship with the apelinergic system and their cardiac diversity in a gender-based paradigm. In this study, we investigated the polarization of cardiac ILCs by Elabela in males versus females in a mouse model. Using flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry analyses, we showed a potential interplay between Elabela and cardiac ILCs and whether such interactions depend on sexual dimorphism. Our findings showed, for the first time, that Elabela is expressed by cardiac ILCs, and its expression is higher in females' ILC class 3 (ILC3s) compared to males. Females had higher frequencies of ILC1s, and Elabela was able to suppress T-cell activation and the expression of co-stimulatory CD28 in a mixed lymphocyte reaction assay (MLR). In conclusion, our results suggest, for the first time, a protective role for Elabela through its interplay with ILCs and that it can be used as an immunotherapeutic target in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders in a gender-based fashion.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout has been recognized as an occupational hazard among health care professionals. The objective of this study was to assess the extent and pattern of burnout in advanced practice providers (APPs) in urology by analyzing American Urological Association Census data. METHODS: The American Urological Association conducts an annual census survey to all providers in the urological care community, including APPs. In the 2019 Census, the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was included to measure burnout among APPs. Demographic and practice variables were assessed to establish correlating factors to burnout. RESULTS: A total of 199 APPs (83 physician assistants and 116 nurse practitioners) completed the 2019 Census. Slightly more than 1 in 4 APPs experienced professional burnout (25.3% in physician assistants and 26.7% in nurse practitioners). Observed higher burnout rates were seen in APPs who were aged 45 to 54 (34.3%), women (29.6% vs 10.8% in men, p value <0.05), non-White (33.3% vs 24.9% in White), those who had 4-9 years of practice (32.4%) and those who practiced in academic medical centers (31.7%). Except for gender, none of the above observed differences were statistically significant. Using a multivariate logistic regression model, gender remained the only significant factor associated with burnout (women vs men with an odds ratio of 3.2 [95% confidence interval: 1.1-9.6]). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, APPs in urological care reported lower levels of burnout than urologists; however, there was a higher chance of female APPs experiencing higher professional burnout in comparison to their male counterparts. Future studies are needed to investigate possible reasons for this finding.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: There is a shortage in the number of urologists needed to satisfy the needs of an aging U.S. POPULATION: The urologist shortage may have a pronounced impact on aging rural communities. Our objective was to describe the demographic trends and scope of practice of rural urologists using data from the American Urological Association Census. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of American Urological Association Census survey data over a 5-year period (2016-2020), including all U.S.-based practicing urologists. Metropolitan (urban) and nonmetropolitan (rural) practice classifications were based on rural-urban commuting area codes for the primary practice location zip code. We conducted descriptive statistics of demographics, practice characteristics and specific rural-focused survey items. RESULTS: In 2020, rural urologists were older (60.9 years, 95% CI 58.5-63.3 vs 54.6 years, 95% CI 54.0-55.1) and were in practice longer (25.4 years, 95% CI 23.2-27.5 vs 21.2 years, 95% CI 20.8-21.5) than urban counterparts. Since 2016, mean age and years in practice increased for rural urologists but remained stable for urban urologists, suggesting an influx of younger urologists to urban areas. Compared with urban urologists, rural urologists had significantly less fellowship training and more frequently worked in solo practice, multispecialty groups and private hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: The urological workforce shortage will particularly impact rural communities and their access to urological care. We hope our findings will inform and empower policymakers to develop targeted interventions to expand the rural urologist workforce.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We examined changes in urological care delivery due to COVID-19 in the U.S. based on patient, practice, and local/regional demographic and pandemic response features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed real-world data from the American Urological Association Quality (AQUA) Registry collected from electronic health record systems. Data represented 157 outpatient urological practices and 3,165 providers across 48 U.S. states and territories, including 3,297,721 unique patients, 12,488,831 total outpatient visits and 2,194,456 procedures. The primary outcome measure was the number of outpatient visits and procedures performed (inpatient or outpatient) per practice per week, measured from January 2019 to February 2021. RESULTS: We found large (>50%) declines in outpatient visits from March 2020 to April 2020 across patient demographic groups and states, regardless of timing of state stay-at-home orders. Nonurgent outpatient visits decreased more across various nonurgent procedures (49%-59%) than for procedures performed for potentially urgent diagnoses (38%-52%); surgical procedures for nonurgent conditions also decreased more (43%-79%) than those for potentially urgent conditions (43%-53%). African American patients had similar decreases in outpatient visits compared with Asians and Caucasians, but also slower recoveries back to baseline. Medicare-insured patients had the steepest declines (55%), while those on Medicaid and government insurance had the lowest percentage of recovery to baseline (73% and 69%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides real-world evidence on the decline in urological care across demographic groups and practice settings, and demonstrates a differential impact on the utilization of urological health services by demographics and procedure type.
